When Pat Kelley moved into her house in the Ridgeway Neighborhood she thought she probably wouldn’t be there long enough to make it worthwhile to plant some rose bushes. Almost 10 years later Pat and her friend Vernon bought the house they were renting from their landlord, helped found the Ridgeway Neighborhood Association and the Central Columbia Get Out the Vote committee.  Now almost 20 years and hundreds of neighborhood and community meetings later, Pat has finally planted a rose bush in the yard, is planning to plant more this fall, and has learned that it’s always worthwhile to plant something beautiful even if you do have to leave it for someone else to enjoy.  Pat works at the University of Missouri and is a member of the Columbia Chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America.
