Financial Counseling

Are you frustrated because you can’t pay your bills? Are you at the end of your rope? Do you need a safe place to ask questions? One-on-one free financial counseling by trained students from the University of Missouri Office for Financial Success. Financial counselors will work with you on any aspect of your personal finances. Appointments welcome every Monday and Friday from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Topics include:

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A)

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax assistance to low income, disabled, homebound, and English as a second language taxpayers. University of Missouri students in the department of Personal Financial Planning program provide this service to individuals in the Columbia community. This service is available to households with incomes less than $53,000. There are no appointments necessary. Services are on a first-come, first serve basis until the site reaches maximum capacity.

Be sure to bring:

  • Photo Identification
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and each of your dependents
  • Form W-2 for every job you or your spouse worked in 2016
  • A personal check and savings deposit slip, if you want your refund directly deposited into multiple accounts. We can also do direct deposit to one account.
  • Your 2015 tax return (optional)
In 2016, did you…
  • Receive unemployment compensation? Bring your Form 1099G
  • Pay for child care? Bring the total you paid for child care expenses and the name, address, and Tax ID/ Social Security number of the child care provider.
  • Pay student loan interest? Bring the total of the student loan interest you paid
  • Pay for tuition? Bring Form 1098 for you, your spouse and/or dependent children
